changing a U/J on the propshaft

Well yesterday I decided it was time to change the U/J's

Interesting job I had to start by removing the passenger seat, as the carpet was bolted down under the runner!

Once i had this out I noticed that the seat runner was the wrong way round i.e it doesn't lock as the knotches are on the oposite side to the bar??? :s

Never mind why is it when you start to do one job it turns in to 5?

Any way seat out carpet off and then it was the the turn of the nuts on the propshaft
more later on this

the strap drive

I got the prop out and refitted U/j's much swearing with the circlips but they eventually came off and I got the joints in.

Re fitted the whole thing and put the interior back together for the club meeting on first sunday of april... very pleased with myself I set off to durham.

Sadly the prop was out of balance and the vibration in the tunnel meant i couldn't drive more than 50 mph with out being vibrated to death....Bugger!

I took it to the local balancing place and they pointed out I had no strap drive???

£30 later I managed to the parts this is what the prop should look like.

Any way the prop is now balanced and refitted only to discover that the drivers side half shaft u/j is knocking!!!!! arrggghghhghg. Steep learning curve this classic car lark! but I am still enjoying it.

In the last post I mentioned the passenger seat being on it's runners the wrong way round. this si now sorted and it works great, I also checked the drivers seat as it always seems like I was leaning to the left when driving the car.......sure enough the seat was bolted down wrong....
That now sorted and the position is much better.

I'm positive it's negative

the fun and international posts I have had about the question of polarity
I have been considering changing my radio to something with FM and a CD or cassette player

Thanks has to go to everyone who gave advice.
It’s a negative earth, I have just checked, however the person who restored it before I got it has used an earth strap as I would expect for the negative to the bulk head and another negative connector to go to the coil, must have been what they had left in their box of bits!

OKIE the herald Posted by Picasa

snow snow snow

Well bang goes trying to get the car out this weekend, as Gateshead has a freak artic storm! dam I had planned to put up the shed and go for a drive to tynemouth.....

Well it has been a while since I have last posted, in that time I have had the car out loads even in -3 degrees on the way back from the club meet... thanks god for the hat, scaf, gloves and thick coat as the heaters aren't really upto much, but the car seems to be fine.

I haven't had to do much to the car I had a slight overheating problem and had to flush the cooling system and change the thermostat. Also had some fun with the sump nut as it still won't come off. But Kwik-fit had an ingenius contraption for sucking the oil out so that didn't cause to much of a problem, shame I had bought the new nut and the oil to do it myself I supose it will keep.

OKIE needs a couple of u/j's on the propshaft and a full lubricate trunions and so on.... hopefully do that before the end of march weather and iminent baby arrival permitting. It's due the end of April but as they say could come any time now.

I plan to fit the pipes for the pre heated manifold soon they are all there waiting for the warmer weather, ironically!

will write again soon
